Rolling tax and Mot exemption for vehicles. IMPORTANT!

Post by johnr » Mon Sep 18, 2017 11:12 pm

this is important! clearly if it all comes off ok, it will be pretty useful for folks with a shed full of old bikes or cars, we already have the rolling tax exemption for vehicles 40 years old and older, and the mot exmption for vehicles made prior to 1960, but its looking more and more like the cuts to the dvla are causing the simplification of the ved and mot testing regime to a flat 40 year rolling exemption for all vehicles, meaning that anything made prior to 1977 will be both tax and mot exempt soon. obviously this will in equal measure allow shonky sheds to be put on the road, but it will also potentially increase the value of 'classic' vehicles that are inside its age range. but its going to make a difference if you have a couple of bikes that you ride, if youre paying 70 odd quid a year to tax each one.

Looking forward to tax exemption but the mot exemption just doesn`t make sense.
Surely an annual check to make sure the vehicle is road worthy makes sense.
I know generally older vehicles are owned by enthusiasts who look after them and do fewer miles but as John says there are going to be some right sheds on the roads.

I'd still get an MOT, I think it would also enhance the value as a means of logging/verifying the annual mileage and from a safety perspective.

Well up for the free rfl though, 9 years for me, it should be 25 year rolling exemption like used to be the case, thieving scumbags!
