Post by fossie » Wed Apr 06, 2022 9:54 pm

Whilst on me jollies I purchased something to read on the ferry . April 2022 practical sportsbikes .
I was suprised that it has kinda returned to its old format ..
But included in this issue was is a Katana article / history of . With interviews from owners ....who are / were. Members .
Bobster, Dave Baughan...and a chap from elsewhere!
In an article the dreaded frame rot from powder coating a frame is covered (sic)

What is the dreaded frame rot from powder coating? I haven't heard that one.

A common problem. The powder coating blocks the little hole at the bottom of the fabrication at the back of the frame for the swinging arm and engine mounts. Water collects and the tin worm flourish.

not quite, the problem is that when frames are chemically dipped, it removes the paint from everywhere including inside this gusseted area, powedercoating covers the exposed metal but the inside of this gusseting is left as bare steel and then chemistry just does its stuff. bare steel, engine heat road salt and rain. and its eaten away from the inside.
another fault is caused when people lose or remove the plastic caps from the ends of the frame tubes near the tail light, water spray from the wheel gets inside the frame, runs down to the engine cradle and again, finds its way out.

Ah, okay.

I am slightly confused by powder coating a frame, then taking my bike out in rain and salt.

Because it's a mode of transport and in Britain it rains ! 😅 Otherwise you'd need to have a 1/12 scale Tamiya model to look at surely.

If it's not a mode of transport how does it move.🤓
So what happens if you are out and a shower happens .....
Why spend so long sitting behind the tail lights in front when you could be there and back ...before you get there😉

What, you don't check the weather forecast before you go out? Crazy.

If I need to Go I go simple . The enjoyment of riding a motorcycle is THE RIDING of a motorcycle , there is absolutely NO joy in cleaning one , so don't bother.....if as some say they love cleaning a motorcycle then get It dirty first ...so just ride it anyway ...simples.!
