Frame Number

Post by Rudders » Tue Sep 12, 2017 8:13 pm

Hi, A newbie here (to the club and to Katana ownership!), I've just purchased a Katana 650G 'barn find' with no V5. I've looked for a frame number, there is one on the headstock- GS650-then 6 numbers, but according to the DVLA thats not it. There is a VIN plate on the front of the headstock, but has been rubbed by cables. Having looked on line apparently it should start with JS and a total of 17 digits which I can't find anywhere on the frame. Any ideas on where to look?
Cheers in advance.

The GS Frame number is the frame number. The reason DVLA cannot find it , is because it has never been registered in this country.
The vin plate is just a recognition plate and carries kg data etc ....no real relevance to registering it.
We suspect that you have purchased the purple German 650 off eBay......if this is the case did you get a NOVA statement with the bike from HMRC?

If you don't have the NOVA statement regeristing will be difficult , not impossible but you will be throwing more good money at it than needed.

If you do have the NOVA statement. You need a dating letter to prove the age of the machine .....we know it is 81-2 , but DVLA need proof.

There are 2 options. Apply to Suzuki UK , Very costly and depends on who is on duty that day.
Or contact VJMC and ask them to date the frame using the frame number, it may take a month or so but they have contacts in Japan ..Their dating letter will be accepted by DVLA ....it will cost around £40 ish ...

Another option is buy a UK FRAME and transfer the bits across......if you were going to restore it you were going to strip it anyway.
Frames do come up in fact a member may have one.....it did a while ago.

Any more info needed let us know, Eitherway let us know how you get on .

I have recently restored a German import my self and will be writing a piece for this very site.

But basically the cost to register with out the original logbook from the original country will be , £40+ for dating letter, a phone call to HMRC to get correct forms. £85 for registration fee and 6months tax .
Insurance £25+ for handling fee to add frame number to your existing policy.( valid for 30 days).
So if can find a frame for less than £150 ...which should be really easy , that is the easy way .

Just for info the frame number should start GS650GD 102****.
The engine number will be GS650G11****. You will notice the D after the G in frame number. This indicate DEUTSCHE.
The number on the frame and engine will not be be match, Suzuki never do.

I have a good solid 650g frame , first registered 1990, complete with V5. About £60, but feel free to haggle.

First registered as in it was imported in 1990 .......an anomaly with the form to fill in with DVLA. The actual reg date will be 82.
