750 Pop up

Post by Hideehole » Thu Jan 30, 2020 7:24 pm

Hi I have just joined the club, seeing as I have just got this week a 750 Pop up Katana. A bike that I really have wanted since I started riding (just at the same time they were produced). I live in New Zealand and as such the pool for bits is small. Please get back to me with any parts you might have spare of info on where to look or get bits refurbished. The bike I have is a runner but I'm going to try and restore it back as new condition.

Look forward to hearing from anybody.
Cheers
Kevin

Welcome along sir.....firstly why get it back original just ride it!
The pool for spares here in the UK is very limited as we only received a container load in 1986 ...
Then in '92through to '97 we got some grey imports from Japan but in reality in the hundreds not thousands and all second hand from their auctions.

New Zealand received about th same as us originally but the Aussies were the biggest market after Japan. They got SE /SF/SG models ....( all the same except clocks and paint.)
When looking for parts for the headlamp if needed , the Japan model and Aussie differ as do the indicators ...
So really we and you need to know which model you have ;)

Thanks for the reply. I fully intend to ride it. I was just thinking about getting all the bits first. Also one of the previous muppets painted it matt white (and it's quite powdery) and go anywhere near it and you end up with grubby marks all over it. Also just about to get a shoulder replacement so was thinking that I could do little jobs while recovering.

The bike is a 1984 GSX750SE in a GR71D frame, 18 inch rear wheel and 240km clock, integral rear indicators.

Hi initially I need to get the left side gold engine cover and I was looking for body work but reading through the section it seems things like side panels are like hens teeth. Quick question has anybody thought about getting the body work scanned then 3D printed or having some moulds made. I know it's expensive for one person but if a group got together it might become feasible.

We did look into getting panels made up in grp but the company who does them wasn't happy with any samples because they were all cracked ....which they all are and the new panels would show the deformities ....meaning the risk of not being able to sell them at a reflective price was low.
Also the market for them is quite constrained.
There is/ was a company in Japan that did replica fairings and possibly panels but again the intricate moulding around the indicator screws meant you had to glue the indicators in.

You say tail lens ...has yours got indicators along side it or just a stop / tail lens.
Without Aussie only ....with ai saw a few on yahoo Japan a few weeks ago.

The engine casings in gold from the uk would need reprinting anyway .....salt/ damp, poor coating some 30 years on sees to that.
The engine is the same as a GSX 750 ES ,so a decent casing should be able to be sourced, then paint it yourself . katana France shows the colour codes.

Hi I was just thinking more along the side panels. I know with modern cad programmes editing is a lot easier than it used to be. It had even crossed my mind that seeing as they crack often you could if you had the money, get the side panels printed in metal. The rear light unit is as you guessed indicators either side of brake light.

Hi Hidehole, I have the same bike and I just got all lamps replaced using Wemoto web site, they do the gasket kits as well. Just a thought.
