Hi Bob

Have you had the starter motor out?

It could be the bearings in the motor

Hmm... that's an odd one then.

As you say, keep going until it doesn't. At least it's easy to bump-start.

Not yet, I think I'll give that a try. A customer of mine runs MotoElectrical and they have the starter motor as same as GSF400 Bandit (Denso) so I should get some discount and they are only near Attleborough so I can go and pick it up. :D
The starter motor did have a harder time last year until I realised it was the Ignitor playing up and got the new Chinese one.

Cheers

I haven't tried bump starting it (so far not needed to) - I take it you have had some practice...!

Many years ago, I had a Bandit 1200 that had a dicky battery, had to bump start for a few days whilst waiting for a new one.

If a little 'un like me can bump a 1200, the 400 should be no problem.

So after swapping the sprag clutch rollers etc and that not fixing the strange noise issue, I then decided to replace the 1 year old MotoBatt battery for a Exide Li-ion one from Tayna (heck that is light!) as the MotoBatt didn't sound like it was turning the engine over that fast and also every now and then it would stutter to turn. I also decided to swap the starter motor (which I got from a customer of mine who has an ATV parts business with a side shop called MotoElectrical (starter motor is the same as listed for the GSF600 Bandit). That seems to have fixed it and also the 400 starts bloody quickly now (and we know 400's like to have the odd starting issue)!

Below is a startup from cold after left standing 2 weeks. I did put the fuel tap on Prime for a few minutes prior to starting.

Next time I'll test without priming the carbs and also we'll see how it goes once the weather starts to get colder. So if you are having starting issues (surely not!) then I can recommend a new starter and the Exide Li-ion battery :-)

Ooh, that did start right up!

Does that Li-ion battery come in the same size case?
What's the cost?
