New exhaust for 400 katana
Hi all,
I recently bought a 1992 400 katana, and it needs a new exhaust. Does anyone do one that'll fit right in, or will I have to buy a custom one. If I have to go custom, does anyone have any recommendations as to who to go to for this job?
Thanks in advance,
Fothers

mk1 impulse pipe wont fit. mk2 impulse will and has the added bonus of being a nicely made stainless steel 4 into 1 system. bolts straight on with no mods required.

This might make me sound stupid, but was the MK2 impulse under another name? As when I search for 'Suzuki MK2 impulse exhaust' it doesn't seem to come up with anything useful.

Trouble is as these bikes were Japan market then there are few spares for items that are bike specific in the UK. Looking on Yahoo Japan then there are quite a few but although the prices are not bad initially, time you add on the in between service, postage and import duty it can mount up.

Luckily I had a stainless Yoshi on mine when I got it I also strongly advise, unless it has been done, you get a Viton O ring kit for the carbs from here:
https://litetek.co/Carb_Kit_Suzuki_GSX400_Katana.html
Kit A will do, though Kit B is cheap as well but just for the fuel and choke seals not the Throttle screws / washers (which are a lot of hassle to do).
This will save you pain in the future if you are going to keep the bike and want it running nice (won't it JohnR!) Those carbs are a pain with the ethonol in petrol with OEM O rings and it causes really bad running (same with GSX-R400 of the same period).
Be interested to know how you got on with the exhaust, esp. if you get one made as it would be useful knowledge for the club and future owners (though there are not so many out there).
I think the 400 is a lovely bike to ride (I have 2 1100's as well) but on the B roads I tend to ride around Norfolk / Suffolk, it is a lot more fun and easier on my body. Not bad for touring on as well - took mine to EuroKat 8 in Denmark this year.

I find using the model Codes can be the best option:
GSX400S Impulse - GK79A
GSX400SSN Katana - GK77A

Plus 1 on the carb “O” rings, I rebuilt the carbs on my 1100 and I also did the fuel tap at the same time. The carbs have performed perfectly since (unlike the rest of the bike )
There rubbish them Jap bikes lad they won't last five minutes! you want to get yourself a nice Royal Enfield!

Re: New exhaust for 400 katana
Plus 2 for the viton o ring kit, I got both kits but couldn't be bothered to mess about with the throttle screws either, use super unleaded fuel 'cos it helps the carbs (Esso supreme super unleaded contains no ethanol) fit a magnetised fuel filter, try two wheel spares on e-bay for parts, exhausts crop up on there now and again, as mentioned, ordering stuff direct from Japan can cost double the price of the part once the customs / shipping have been added, good luck with the search.

If you tap in Suzuki GSX 400 exhaust in to eBay , you will find 3 or 4 end cans , and 1 set of down pipes . The model impulse you need will listed by the years 90's not the 83 ish model.
