Starter motor noise on starting
Something new for this year on the 400...! Advice needed
When I go to start the 400, sometimes just after it starts, it makes a strange noise (not everytime) from the starter motor area.
Is this the actual motor or the starter gears etc?
I got it on video so you can hear it...

Re: Starter motor noise on starting
Must be something to do with the starter clutch. I bet JohnD has had his apart and may be able to advise. Maybe one of the weights isn't returning properly. New kits are quite cheap.

sounds like the starter clutch just holding on for a fraction of a second.

Re: Starter motor noise on starting
Thanks for the diagnosis, now you've said it and I've looked at how it works, that sounds spot on!
I've bought the puller tool to get the signal plate off. I saw this repair kit:
https://www.motorcycleproducts.co.uk/to ... bike=25590
I might give that a try as I should be able to get it for Saturday and hopefully sort it all out over the weekend an d give it an oil change and filter at the same time.
Cheers
Rob

Tourmax is normally good quality stuff. Often made in Japan by the OEM.

Hi all
Been away cooking in the sun so missed the latest posts. Yes, thats one of the rollers not returning in the sprag clutch. The sprag is mounted to the timing disk on a taper to the crank. I just heated up the general area of the crank and used two large scewdrivers as a wedge behind the clutch unit. Dont need to get Medieval a few taps had mine released. If you need a good unit I have one.
Cheers.

Re: Starter motor noise on starting
I bought a puller for about £24ish in the end to save my screwdrivers! I've replaced the rollers, springs etc and it still makes that noise on starting unfortunately, not sure what to do know, probably leave it until something packs up!...johnD wrote: ↑Thu May 18, 2023 5:45 pmHi all

Oh, that's a bit crap.
How is that assembly lubricated?

With the engine oil, all looked OK as far as I could see, even the old bits looked good.
