You only need to reach the ground when you stop, just don't stop often, being nearly 5' 2" can touch on tiptoes, just. I found my original shocks too hard, would speed wobble without passenger or luggage on, I've been running the Ikon shocks on lowest preload & damping set at 3, handles fine. You could always put a couple of breeze blocks in some panniers.

ive a set of original 1980's ohlins on my kat, theyre so stiff that the bike barely moves when i sit my 20 stone on the seat, and at speed the ride was so harsh that the slightest bump made the back wheel lose traction and light up the tyre. had to change them for konis in the end.
