well lex really helped me out by registering the bike to me with my address, so i had the dutch equivalent to the v5 in my name
That was handy, shame about the other bike, would have been useful. If I do again, I'd probably chance it and see, though it would be in bits in the back of the car! NOVA says you have 14 days so it shouldn't have to be done at the border in theory but you know what officials at those places can be like.

Interested to see how you get on with a Dutch registration in your name. In Holland generally the process is similar to here for export, but you take the Reg Doc to an office to tell them it is exported which is what Lex did for me with the X7 and you get the Exported registration paperwork (the TZR250 was the same). The equivalent of doing the export option on the V5 here) which I am guessing you can't do now? That takes it off the dutch system else they'll always be contacting you if they need info about the bike? Or is that what Lex actually did?

I had to deal with HRMC CARS in Belfast with the TZR and I would suggest phoning them if you haven't:

HMRC CARS team
ecsm.nchcars@hmrc.gov.uk
Telephone: 0300 322 7071

They were really helpful the times I have talked to them. You'll have to send off the paperwork to them and they will assess the VAT liability and let you know. I initially sent off the TZR via post but hadn't heard from them for a week so called them and they said email it, it's more efficient as mail goes around the houses, has to be scanned in etc and takes a while. I emailed it off the Thursday evening and the NOVA was back on the Monday (was in EU then so no VAT to worry about).

Good luck.

In true Smallkat style, I would like it's smaller sibling, the VX800.
Technically not the smaller sibling ...as its a v twin, so a different beast , again a better bike than its reputation maybe a bit ahead of its time .....white clocks stopped me getting one in 91...

Was great to have you over John, thanks for fixing my roof

The export documents can be a bit of a hassle, takes quite a bit of time for the licensed businesses to do. Luckily one such business is a client of mine so was willing to help out.

It tells our RDW (DLVA) that the vehicle is officially not mine any longer and is designated for export. I had to submit all John’s details so that they would appear on the export documents. This made John the legal owner of said bike so the customs officers really should not have had a leg to stand (or piss) on.

What a big fecker that bike is.

It's faster to break than to repair.

well this has taken a bit of a turn. i cant register it in the uk because i imported it myself. what i should have done, the hmrc tell me is pay an import company to collect it and import it and file the nova documentation, they would then bill me for collecting it, importing and delivering it, and collec thte relevent tax and vat on behalf of hmrc. unfortunately i foolishly followed the advice i was given that i could import it and then i had 2 weeks to submit a nova application and just pay tax on the bikes cost.
but before you take me to task on following the wrong advice, i got my info from....... HMRC! yes, their website says i can import privately and do the nova myself, but when i called them they say 'ahh, the rules have changed now and you cant do that' so i say 'but your website says i can' to which they replied 'yeah, we really should update that website, ooops, our bad, still cant do that though'.
their advice was, and you wont believe this, find an importer, have them collect the bike from me, fill in and submit the nova paperwork, which is now no longer based on the bikes cost, but is now based on their opinion of the market value of the machine, so im being asked to pay a tax on the value of a 650 quid bike thats calculated on the opinion of the import company based on what they find the bikes are selling for in the uk. (if you think this is a scam based on inflating payments the hmrc recieve for imports then i think youre dead right). after this the 'importer' will bill me and after i pay they will deliver my own bike back to me and i will still have to register it and pay the duty for that too. so im stuck a bit. i tried doing it their way and they bent the rules so i couldnt. so, im looking for a uk frame and v5 and ill do it that way instead. tossers!

still think its a bloody bargain though! cheers Lex!

well this has taken a bit of a turn.
Sorry to hear that John, this was one reason why I was so interested in how you got on. I had a couple of conversations with HMRC in Belfast (who do NOVA) and they told me the same info you got from the website, I thought the whole point of NOVA was 14 days to declare it and pay the VAT / import duty if due.
This was precisely the process I used on getting the Swiss 1100, though I used Chas Mortimer to collect all they did was pay the VAT (5%) and that was it. I then called HMRC, sent them the info and NOVA returned fine. Although this was before Brexit, Switzerland weren't in the EU then so in theory it was the same process as now.
I really don't know why you have to use an importer, so long as you pay the VAT / duty then what is the problem? it should make no difference. This is a real shame as I was hoping to possibly get something else from Euroland again, but using a collection service is too expensive now from what it was. Due to Covid restrictions I had to get it collected and as said it was £600 for collection and delivery, then 5% VAT which was £100 and the courier company charged an admin fee of £50 to pay the £100, so the VAT with fee was £150, totaling £750 door to door.

John - this might be of interest - a local VJMC member bought a bike in from the US using Flashback Motorcycles who ship to Barrow-in-Furness. I asked the process and the response was

"the system is Flashback have an agent in Barrow, (Furness motorcycles) run by a chap called Billy Woodburn. He deals with the import side, l have had to pay import duty and vat to him and he issues the Nova certificate."

so you could try them as that isn't so far from you. Maybe an admin fee on top.

Keep us informed.

Is it possible you simply spoke to the 'wrong' person?? And they fCucked up ??

Seems odd to change the rules in that way unless there is some sort of backhander goings on??

It would seem that this isn't really the importing bit that is the issue but ...bare with me HMRC are now setting up that taxes are done online only and they don't have to calculate anything anymore , the goal is everyone has a program that does it automatically at source.
Even self employed couriers now have to use an online system / app that does it all for them !
This came into force just recently .

I would ring again and speak to someone else. Might get a different answer.

Second choice, get UK frame as you said.
