Has anyone ever experienced a faulty digital multimeter?

Well after putting in a new stator and trying 2 different brand new reg/recs, the output to the battery was still the same. 21votls. And when i tested the output from the stator im not sure that it was giving a correct reading.

Might try another Multimeter just for curiousities sake

you were usind the dc scale as opposed to the ac scale werent you? ac is indicated by a straight line under a wavey line where dc is indicaated by a straight line over a dotted line (well they are on mine anyway!!)
if you check the battery with the engine off does it show 12ish volts?

Without a doubt i am using the correct setting. I remember using it last year for testing and it worked perfectly. Im getting a reading of 17.5 volts off the standing battery which cant be right. The battery is a brand new gel and it gave me that reading when i first got it.
That cant be right.

sounds like your multimeter is a bit off. if you were getting 17.5v standing then you would be blowing bulbs all over the place. id get a fresh multimeter mate! try checking the battery in your car, or even just get a 1.5volt AA or AAA battery from your torch or something similar, and see what its showing. a AA or AAA are single cell so cant ever put out over 1.5v

Theres nothing in the manual about what type of battery it has. Theres a sticker on the back telling of the internal fuses. I removed the cover to find a 9v which was all but flat. Swapped it with the new one Et Voila 12.45 volts at the battery.

Taught me and hopefully someone else a lesson someday. Now im laughing.
