I thought it shows somebody out there is websearching (googling, as we say) for us? Nothing serious, so I've been told. But I don't know much about computers and the internet...

it's an automaton!
Almost!
It's just an automated process that google run to index websites.
They clearly name the bot so that if any webmaster chooses they can restrict access and prevent google indexing sections or specific pages etc.
