Unfortunately it's a sign of the times. I spend a great deal of my time selling our companies products to councils all around northern england and scotland. and the current cuts are decimating the council's. Whilst I'm not a fan of the current situation it's not just the lower level of council staff who are losing their jobs it's also a large chunk of the upper tier, and middle management. We live near a really busy road which my youngest has to cross to get to school. I shudder to think what could happen without our crossing supervisor.

I know what your saying, the small man gets hit by the cuts when the boss at the councils keep there £90 per hr pay, or that's what the DCC boss is on.

There is a ever growing gap between the rich and poor. Fat cats hire middle management for over inflated salaries in order to justify their own high salaries. Most of the jobs are pointless and are just empire building. And of course when the cuts have to come, who goes ? the people on the bottom of the ladder. Coz its easy.
Come the revolution.

the problem is, its easy to slate the head of the council thats sacking lollypop men. but as attractive as that sounds, we all really know that if you keep the lollypop man and sack his boss, what happens when they want to sack the dinner lady, the binman, the street sweeper, the gritter driver(who is probably also the bin man!) etc etc the anger is being pointed at the councils chief execs, but for all their inflated salaries, councils need them. middle management doesnt shuffle paper round like in dilbert, it makes sure the binman et al gets paid, and the streetlights stay on and the law is complied with. not glamorous not fun but one of them shitty mundane jobs that needs doing which nobody ever notices till its not done. the anger should be directed to the people who slash the budgets for our councils whilst not cutting their own, those who have capitulated to the wishes of the city fatcats in the banks and delivered a mere slapped wrist over bonuses, in the same week its revealed that 10 million quid of the torys election fighting fund came from, guess where? yep, the city fatcats who run the banks and finance houses. who says that payback is a bitch eh! ive yet to see anyone say they are planning to cut mps pay or make their job harder for less money, the problem is, the cabinet is composed almost entirely of multi millionaires(cameron himself has a personal wealth estimated at 20 million) and i think their only experience of being poor was reading about it in the pages of dickens at oxbridge.

Many a true word John,but.... the pay scales of local government officials in the middle and high tiers have soared over the last 5 years(labour gov !!) and are not realistic for the jobs that they do. Pay scales for middle management is now higher than in the private sector.

John, difficult to find a balanced and impartial newspaper. If you find one let me know

Daily Mail no better or worse than most of em. I think the article was referring to the fact that their allowances have (in some cases !!!) risen by over 150% over 5 years. I am sure your pay rise wasnt that much ?
At the end of the day John, i dont care whose fault/decision it was at the council/Gov, i just think its the wrong one. Cutting a lollipop lady whose salary is what £3K-£4K a year isnt going to make that much differance to the overall cost savings. It will however put a whole load of kids lives at risk from crossing a very busy road. What price is that ?
Cheers

But did you read the story yesterday about the 155,000 illegal immigrants that are claiming ESA, sick pay & maternity pay???
I've lived & worked all/most of my life in UK & I struggled getting ESA even tho' I couildn't wpork due to medical f*ck up that left a massive open wound in my groin yet the b*ggers get it no questions asked!!!
Stop their money & use some of that for the more essential needs, like lollipop ladies etc
