1100 Katana race report

Post by Pop-Kat » Sun Apr 21, 2013 6:36 pm

Eventfull weekend at Darley moor.
First proper race meeting for me this season as Brands Hatch was cancelled due to snow.

Saturday.

Went out on the Kat in superbike practice, was going well, revving nice and clean, I was learning a new circuit, scrubbing in new tyres and brake pads so not up to pace but going fairly well until the 3rd lap when my left foot slipped off the peg, had a look down and i was covered in oil :( got it back to the pits and the whole bike from the front of the engine backwards was covered in oil including the left side of tyre, lots of it (good job there was no real left handers) from the knee's down i was covered too, right down in me boots  2 cans of brake cleaner later and it was cleanish again. I jumped on the Yam FJ11 (spare bike for this weekend) and went out in Production practice, in which you also have to set a time for grid positions. The FJ is a big heavy road bike with only a slight mods for the track and as is not really ideal, but handy to have this weekend, Managed to set a time which put me 2nd on grid in the class (8th overall on grid), not quite sure how, lol. but after a few laps it wouldn't engage third gear properly, lots of crunching.

Back to the Kat, we started it up and couldn't see any oil coming out, checked the sight glass and the oil was on max :? after some head scratching decided that fuel must have got down the bores as the bike was left overnight on prime (whoops). there was not breather hose on the top engine breather so we got some pipe and ran it into a catch tank then wnet out for the first superbike race (on the back of grid), did the warm up lap and had a peep down to see oil again so pulled back in the pits. this time it was apparant that the headgasket and suspect base gasket too had blown big time and was chucking the oil out under load. End of the Kat for this weekend.
A few came over from the Kat rally to watch and helped out with trying to fix the bike too, many thanks for coming along aswell as helping. Sorry I was unable to get the bike out for you to see racing.
Anyway, got back on the FJ for the proddy race and finished 2nd in class, which the best that could be done on the day.
The meeting was running a little behind time so the next proddy race was postponed until sunday.

SUNDAY.
Got an extra practice before the first race and was going better on the FJ, staight in and back out for the Proddy race. warm up lap ok, off the start line, 1st, 2nd, crunch crunch 3rd, oh bugger, bloody gearbox !, got into the first turn about 8th, opened it up and my right foot slipped off the peg, look down and OIL..WTF
Pulled straight off the track, it was pouring out the righthand side
Back in the pits and took off the right crankcase cover to find the crank seal had blown, not helped by an old repair that had failed.

End of weekend, we went home..

A busy and eventfull weekend, started great by popping up the the mancee rally, then ended very down. Oh well thats racing as they say.
Hoping to get the bikes proper engine rebuilt for Angelsea in mid may, but not sure it can be done in time as it needs pistons, barrels and need to find a good flywheel yet as well as completely rebuilding, running in and setting up. will try to be there, if not i may well have to wait for Cadwell in June..

Thanks mate, wasn't really slagging off* the FJ, just that it's not really set up to race and the gearbox wasn't good, I decided to take it over the XJ after much thought, maybe the wrong choice. On the upside it's now apparent the FJ was going to spew it's oil sooner rather than later, at least it didn't have me off, at a different track i might have been on me arse.

*guess i must have sounded pretty pee'd off, I tend to get a bit excitable at race meetings, must be the adrenalin
