johnr wrote:its not so fancy. basically there is a sensor in the clocks that retards the ignition when the speedo reads 112 mph, but its simple enough to overcome, you just pull the wires from the sensor. but in the absence of a full engine management system, the only way to restrict the power output of an engine is to design it to produce a certain power output by either restricting the mix going in, restricting the exhaust coming out or messing with the timing of whn it gets burned in the cycle. all a bit too hi tech for 1981, remember this is the era where an electronic ignition still needed mechanical weights on springs to retard and advance the ignition based on engine speed.
Your right in what your saying but itf its anything like my CBR400 which was also restricted by the clocks then removing the clocks didnt fix the problem. in fact made it worse. because the cdi isnt getting the signal it falls into limp and wouldnt rev past 5K.

Easy fix. you solder in 2 resistors both of 2k at either end which looped 2 wires on the loom. this then fooled the CDI into bypassing the restriction all together and opened up the engine.

Not sure if this would be the same case for these but just pulling the wires out doesnt always work :D
