Starter clutch methinks

Post by colonial » Thu Oct 03, 2013 2:54 pm

Folks, a quick question please. the starter motor spins fine, but does not engage(ie turn the motor over) Is this a buggered starter clutch, and if so, do I have to replace the whole thing, or just a part of it?

Whole thing is £220/EUR 260.

Thanks Peter

Could be a loose nut or snapped bolts... Take it apart and see what's what... It'll be apparent when you get the cover and or rotor off ;)

not really... you can lean it over to the right and the oil should stay put...

Thanks Steve.

Took the starter clutch out, with the bike tilted as suggested, that worked fine, no oil spillage.

Stripped it, and found no bovious problems, excessive wear or anything untoward. I compared it with photos of damaged ones on the web, and watched a few youtube videos for comparisson.

I cleaned it all up, and put it back to gether and put it back on. It worked fine for a little while, then hey presto it went back to its old tricks again of spinning without engaging.

Should I replace the whole thing, get one of the spring/pin/roller kits, or just get another whole unit? also should there be oil in that compartment other than a small quantity of lubrication? Perhaps the seal on the crank has gone?

Start with the spring roller kit.... Can't imagine how the rest would wear for it to pack in... All the right bits on the gears? Shim wise etc?

I compared it with schematics on the net, and carefully checked it over and found nothing wrong... Perhaps the pins and rollers are slightly worn, and are sticking. Let me get the pin/spring/roller set and see if that cures it.

Regards

Hi.has the flywheel come loose? Is the nut on the end of the crank loose? The starter clutch is fitted to the flywheel via three allen bolts as Steve said. These come loose and rattle. Then one at a time the heads snap of. If the starter is spinning and still has teeth on the end it should crank if the starter clutch engages.

Nothing loose, it was on very tight, and all looked fine, and in fact in good condition. I will order the spring etc set and see if that does the trick. Not cheap at £32 for a couple of minute bits. A bit cheeky methinks.

As to oil behind the cover:
The whole assy runs in oil.
