Popup black engine cases - satin or gloss?

I want to freshen up the engine cases, so I bought some PJ1 black satin and it looks too matt, and not a deep black either, more a very very dark grey.
So I got some PJ1 black gloss and - too glossy, very shiny.
Opinions please - what was the original finish like and has anyone had good results with currently available paint?

I know, just call me Goldilocks.

Looks good. Thanks Pete. I'll order some of that for comparison.
