While researching the carb stripdown on the 400 I came across a few articles about Japanese bikes using JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screws and not Philips, though they look similar - 30 years of working on Jap bikes and this is the first I have ever heard of this!

or Google other useful sites... I checked some the screws I replaced on the carbs and sure enough they did have the dot on them.
Perhaps that explains all the rounded heads over the years (apart from the screws being made of chesse of course) with the Philips screwdrivers "camming out" of the slots and chewing them up. I have gone and bought (at great expense!) a P1, P2 and P3 screwdriver to see if indeed they work better.

Well well. that explains a lot. I know that you always had to get a very tight fit if you used a Philips screwdriver or it would probably chew. I always replace the bastards with allen heads after I have smashed the feck out of em

A Phillips No 2 screwdriver with the tip ground off slightly does JIS screws perfectly. I wish I knew that years ago too

I've had this set of screwdrivers for quite a while....well worth the investment. They have little ridges on the ends for extra grip on the screw..
