Pop up rear shock adjuster.

Hi guys, just giving my rear shock a service and i was wondering what the go is with the pre load adjuster? I read somewhere that there should be a cable? But mine has a braided line going to the shock. Im assuming it has fork oil in it?? If i were to wind the plunger to five and back fill the shock and line with oil then it should work right? Assuming of course that the line isnt split

In short No! The oil in the shock is measure amount under pressure. If the shock is soft while ramped up the oil has lost its viscosity.

Are you sure the braided hose is connected? We have seen cases of hose replaced by line to fill the gap.

Can you photo the actual shock so maybe we can identify it to get you the info/ level needed and or to add to our info which shock fits.

The line was connected. When i unscrewed it there was only a little oil in the line, none in the shock. I have two of these and both were the same. The one in the bike was leaking so i bought this one to replace it i just dont know how much oil i should add?

Interesting ....it looks like the original but that is cable operated and not refillable as it is sealed.
If you bought another what was it listed as?

Does the adjuster have a gauge on the back with a ball bearing that slides down the number lines.?

Well they do look indeed as if of a pop up (gsx750 SE). The Es ones had another dial although the same diameter etc, but non had a braided line and non are repairable or refillable as they are filled and welded at the factory hence no reference to amount.
No oil will come out as it is sealed in where that hose goes to is where the cable goes to with a peg to adjust.
Where did you get these from?
Either way any replacement original shock is over 30 years old so even if very low mileage won't be at its best. An aftermarket monoshock is the better option.
I fell lucky and came by a 750 ES one brand new in box ex Greek police spec one for £35 . Excellent 2 up but needs loosening for single riding.

Thanks Fossie! So there should be a cable running inside the tube and not oil? I assumed these were adjusted by oil pressure as there is no sign of a cable?! The tube screws into the shock on mine and is sealed by an o-ring.
I find it strange that none came out with a braided line yet mine both have identical lines? I got the spare shock from New Zealand.

It may be possible that the later SF model changed the shock but they are so rare here we wouldn't know. When a pop up is broken up it would just be listed as SE because that denotes pop up.
We need to check part numbers.
