Piston rings

I’m going to pull the top end off the motor within the next few weeks and fingers crossed I’ll only have to hone the bores and fit new rings. Has anyone got any recommendations as to where I can buy rings bearing in mind I’m skint and on a severe budget? The alternative is to just leave the bores alone and take a chance that fitting new stem seals will cure its smoking habit

Normally I would say stuff it and just do the stem seals , but once someone has been in there before to err "freshen" , "check" whatever, then these engines hardly ever thank you for it ,espically if they have just done the work and sold it ......yep by default and not on purpose I am guilty of this!
Sometimes it could be just a simple mistake or not torquing etc but , as you are capable enough and will only do it again anyway .....do the rings etc.
There is a company in Chester who do rings at reasonable price , I'll see if I can find them.

Has anyone tried these? I rebuilt a friends Suzuki GT550 two stroke with one of CI’s piston kits and apart from the circlips they where good quality. I’m just a bit wary of using pattern rings with oe pistons on a big four stroke so if anyone has used them can they give me their opinion?

Maybe I missed a thread where you describe your engine smoke problems...

Always do simple work first unless you are safe in your diagnosis. Means: Valve stem seals first. Once you're on it: check Valve guides clearances.

Thanks Pedda, yes I’ve bought new genuine Suzuki stem seals and gaskets but I thought while I’ve got it in bits I might as well change the rings and hone the bores. I will measure the bores and if they are out of spec I’ll treat them to a rebore.

Well I’ve ordered the rings from Cruzin Image and at £54 including shipping from Japan compared to the £170 for genuine Suzuki ones it’s much easier on the old wallet moths
Stuff I’ve ordered from Cruzin Image before is generally here in less than 14 days so as soon as they turn up I’ll let you know how it goes.

Well the Cruzin Image piston rings turned up safe and sound. 7 days delivery from japan some UK sellers ain’t that fast. The quality looks good and they where well protected in individual sets in sealed plastic wallets which where inside strong cardboard boxes. The proof of the Yorkshire pudding with custard will be in the eating so now I’ve got to get a free weekend to get the job done.
