650 kat with smoking habit

Post by katscott » Sun Mar 17, 2019 5:38 pm

Hi guys, my kat started smoking heavily before winter lay up. I borrowed a compression tester and failed to get it to work. No readings that made any sense. I am hoping as the head gasket is leaking and all 4 plugs are oily its a combination of failed stem seals and pattern gasket( never again but aren't genuine Suzuki f*£king expensive ) . I'm also hoping its not rings but The kat goes as fast as ever but its bordering on looking like a 2 stroke. Has anyone ever fitted different barrels off a GS or gsx 750 ? If I have to go rebore route wondered if bigger bore is an option

Now strangely I have a 650 that has this very same issue. :? New rings and top end done....ran fine superfine and dandy.....a few months later it was sold to another member but it developed this smoking habit.....I bought it back from him and will sort it out.
It starts straight away it ticks over no issues ....except you can't see it, It's gone all Hendrix..." Purple haze". 8-)
When we were doing the work I ordered a gasket set specifically NOT Athena I wanted either NP or Vesrah these are both Japanese quality and make gaskets for the OEM ....Athena is Italian and comes with Italian mechanical quality... ....Guess which turned up ..  ...I complained but they were out of stock and we were on the bench ....
From this I can say crossing your fingers and hoping doesn't work......neither do Athena gaskets ESPIECALLY ..stem seal gaskets they are OK to start with but are designed for the Italian market where they are used to polishing and changing cam belts ever 1000 miles. :o :)
I now have NP gasket set but will probably get OEM stem seal just to be safer. :ugeek:

gs750 barrels can be made to fit im told, although the fave trick is to try and drop the liners out of the 750 barrels and shrink them into the 650 casting. having said that, youre only going to gain about 75cc
