are big bores worth it?

Post by Brandon » Sat May 14, 2011 12:00 pm

Hi You knowledgable folks,

I am stripping my 1100 motor as it needs to be blasted and rebuilt for my long term project, based on a 750 frame and bodywork.

The bores and pistons look fine, so the big question: Is it worth going to the expense of big boreing the motor or just new rings and a hone??

II want lots of low down power and grunt.

I believe the 1100 motor naturally have this so is it worth it?? and if so which pistons are the best.

Secondly, if my main aim is grunt is the head worth flowing/porting and can this be done without sacrificing any low end power?

Cheers

Brandon

I reckon a wiseco 1170 kit will give you what your looking for, you'll get a nice bit of extra bottom end and midrange, the pistons will probably be slightly higher compression but if not you could get the head skimmed a little. you don't need to do head work but a clean up with a light flow will complement the big bore. obiously you'll need to rejet the carbs to suit and you'll need to put at least 3 heavy duty springs in the clutch. on that note make sure the clutch is all good, if in doubt put some new genuine suzuki plates in it, just my opinion, hope it helps :)

yep, big bore kits will give it a bit more bottom end, as well. so long as you dont go daft its a good compromise. however, if my motor didnt need it, i wouldnt bother myself. an 1170 kit plus boring the barrels isnt a cheap option by any stretch.

The 1170 kit gives a good boot in power & torque, i've run one in the past with good results. Though they are getting a little hard to get hold of now, i do believe Wiseco still list the kit.
Its definatly worth while stripping all the motor down to check the bottom end components...remember these motors are knocking on a bit now, check the clutch is in good shape, & get a billet backplate kit fitted if the budget allows, as the clutch is the weak point. Fit a new camchain & replace all the external oil seals, theres nothing worse than the sprocket seal failing after the rebuild on the top end a few thousand miles later. Higher volume oil pump gears are a good mod too....
All the best Deanotek.
