Hi, dropped my wheel off at powder coaters tother day and also mentioned wanting disc centres doing. He suggested he blasted the centres and then I masked them up for him to powder. But when I went to pick them up he had blasted the whole disc including the pad surface. he said that this would be ok and the pads would sort that out in no time. is he right or is he just trying to get out of his workers mistake? He's normally very good and his work is spot on but this has thrown me a bit so wondered if anyone could advise. I could always find some more discs on ebay or perhaps on here but just want it to be right, thanks

Just a guess but i reckon they will be fooked.

Im not sure either but i think it would depend on what the discs were blasted with. If it was with course sand or stainless steel beads id say they where knacked, but if it was plastic beads you should be fine. Every disc has a mimimum service thickness, say 3mm or so. As long as there is more than that left after they have been cleaned up i would think you would be fine.

If it got lots of little dents all over it the pads wont have 100% contact. However if they were good thick discs then you could get a mate to clean them up in a lathe. I dont think they would or warped in the coating process cos they get hot any way.

I've had loads of discs blasted in the past where I used to work, they were done in a machine by very fine small steel balls, & they were always fine.. no problem.
The blaster was used for cleaning up cast iron molds for different types of bottles/jars, & they all had to be within a certain specification. ie, you couldn't blast them & loose a millimetre every time. The wear to the metal surface was extremely minimal.
But then again..i suppose it depends on what your coater is blasting stuff with...
Personally I would say they'd be fine.
At the end of the day whats he masking your discs up with when hes going to blast them.. surely it would blast the masking clean off..

theyll be ok, in fact they will probably work better for a while until the pads bed in and polish them smooth again. dont fret over it, they will scrub in within 20 miles.

I bet you won't be able to measure how much material was taken off anyway. Try the disks with the same pads you used before and be careful in the wet for the first few brake actions. It might go well before they just feel the same. I think You won't need different discs.
