Second Gear - Jumping Out?

Hi Guys,

I've just ridden the kat to the MOT station.

One potentially alarming thing that has reared it's ugly head is second gear.

It seems to be jumping out for a split second, then back in again!

There is like a ker, then the revs blip for a half a second as the throttle is on, then the clunk as it goes back in.

Either it's gearbox or the clutch is letting go momentarily.

I did read somewhere a while back that 2nd gear can be a bit problematic if riders have used the torque instead of the revs....

In this thread started by Katscott there is advice on 2nd gear issues.

Plenty to try before pulling the engine out.

It is a problem that occurred. When bikes were constantly. Ridden hard in second and not changed up in the torque band . 3000 to 6000 .

Oh dear....

Is it likely to become worse? Or be a major problem?

:( The only thing certain is won't repair it's self :D

I've know people have this issue for years and not do anything about just learnt to change up in the torque range quickly as there is enough bottom torque that missing 2 nd isn't an issue.

As posted in the article. The problem is 2 and 5 are on the same shaft so spend most of their time there , which is why the other 650 problem is likely the same diagnosis ridden hard like a chain driven bike and not changed up early.

Personally I wouldn't lose sleep over it if there are no whines from 5th except a possible turbo type whine if you get my drift. As that's is normal.

Fossie,

That's what I've just said to the missus, may just be a case of having to live with it, it's not as if it jumps out and stays out - It can be one of it's little "quirks" if you will.

I've only had it in 5th on the centre stand while ticking over, and it appeared quiet enough - But there is a big difference between running freely and under load!

Chances of finding another gearset that doesn't have the same problem? Pretty much zero I would say!

or you could repair / replace 2nd gear on the knackered shaft that you took out earlier?... i know my 650 had 2nd changed as the po gave it to be as proof it had been changed... lol - cannot imagine it being massively different to other gsx's in the range? others will likely know more but it's an option i recon...

Well I was thinking that Steve....

Nurse it through the summer, and do it over winter.

I've always been a little shy of gearboxes in the past - Too many little springy things to ping out and never be seen again :-)

would likely need to give the shaft to someone in the know as i think things need pulling and pressing... could be wrong but would be nice to sort the knackered one, use the bike, then swap over next winter where you'd have discovered xyz also needs sorting out ;)
