Today I am mostly hating carburettors!

Post by fossie » Sat Mar 11, 2017 9:20 pm

:? Ok so we are dealing with the German reg'd 650.
When I got it, the carbs were green inside. That was some 5 years ago. I obviously changed all the jets and floats for new..........except 1 that wouldn't budge. It started and ran fine. Sometimes 2 and 3 took a while to chime it. But joined us .
I balanced the carbs, but they tended to follow the eu line and do just enough to not play along :x
I actually paid someone in the end.....however no 2 and 3 stopped working , the bike ran and ticked over on 1 and 4 , so swapped the coils .....all 4
Bike was mot'd ready for registering as UK , No 2 and 3 have gone awol again........2 new ( used but good) coils later still no 2and 3.
Carbs off,All float bowls full fuel flows though the errant carbs units.
Emulsion tubes?
Any one got a set of 650 carbs hanging about that we know are good? :? :?

Ok so after reading what I'd written, I came to the same conclusion ........I am in deed a dick'ead!
Swapping over the coils etc actually confirms issues to the power feed for coil 2/3 .... :?

You will notice that the Rev counter happily sits at 1000 rpm... While the orange/white and yellow / black wires for the coil feed are in fact not connected , they are on show by the throttle cable.

On the plus side the carbs are indeed clean....and I was able to practice getting 650 carbs on and off......5 mins each operation  :ugeek:

Ok so following extensive methodically inspired fault finding.( shoving a multimeter in wires of he same colour) I have deduced that the CDI is not playing ball.

Obviously  my stock cupboard of such items is lacking in 650 ones ....( no S1-2 either 'cos that would have surficed)
Is there such an item out there waiting for its chance to show what it can do?

I won't be beaten by a stubborn German ( bike) .......or is this the real reason the original owner parked it up?

Is it time to spend some cash Fossie and buy a Dyna ignition system or similar?

arent they the same ignition as all the gs range and also the early 750 and 1100 gsx motors? the ignition pickups and adv ret are the same so the ignitions should be the same too. have you tried fitting the 650 pickups to your 1100 to see if they take the problem with them?

I have 3 spare 650 pickups in a box .......but as the bike ran on all 4 before then 2 intermittently I don't see how it should be pick ups. I need a spare CDI anyway if this is not the reason.
As for fitting a dyna system .....wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy toooo much money and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much faffing about..

      :? Right officially really really really f***ed off now!!!!!!!!!
A CDI from a supposedly running bike fitted, NO "kin difference......Another back plate (points)fitted.....NO 'kin difference either .

Right lost now , it ran ok up til the day I took it to Cadishead motorcycles.....that morning on the day of taking it for MOT it ran on 2 (1-4). Alan had it running ok for most of the time ....until it was coming home! Back on 1-4. 2&3 haven"t parked since. :?:

Ideas from our learned crew please?

Typical the NOVA notification arrived.

So not quite as pis**d off as I was.. 1.5 hrs ago,.we have 3.5 cyls now!
Took plugs out of 2 and 3 burnt all the fuel off them with a lighter which warmed them up....( remember 2 strokes.) pressed starter .........more than 2 cyls a bit uneven but ... Checked the pipes with spraying wd 40 on them 1,2,4 instant dissipation of fluid...3. A bit of evaporation...

So we are back to Carbs!!!
Incidentally I returned the original backplate on to check it.....works fine. :x
Must have been a double whammy of ign and fuel.

is it sparking at all? have you eliminated a switch fault or a failure in the live feed to the cdi?

have you eliminated plugs and ht leads by swapping the leads over between 1 and 4 if the fault stays then you know the ht caps and leads are fine and its either a plug or the carbs. but if the bike still runs on 3.5 pots, but the .5 pot swaps from 4 to 1 then its the lead or ht cap.
