I recently purchased a rather tatty barn find Kat to say the least frame number was visible however heavy corrosion meant that engine number was pretty hard to read. So the problem I have is I used a scotbright pad to try and clean the number up so I could photograph it to send to vjmc to apply for an age related plate. Doing so I have made it impossible to read the first 2 characters I believe they should be GS however it looks like it could possible be G8 dew to the characters being pretty much non existent what do I sent to vjmc or should I try to re punch the characters?

GS mate... but id be careful restamping.. it can snap the number block off completely..

When I applied for an age certificate I took a "rubbing" with paper and pencil. This was accepted by vjmc.
Worth a try.

Couple of things , firstly what bike is it ? But if it says G it will be GS . But before you go any further you will need a NOVA statement from HMRC with the frame number on it to prove no VAT due, without that a dating letter will be useless as DVLA won't issue a reg anyway.

The engine number is irrelevant anyway and not nessecary.

But like jmac says an old fashioned pencil rubbing will bring up the number.

I am in the middle of regeristing a German 650 and when a number is issued I will do a feature on how to get it done.

Thanks for all the help. it is a gsx1100s. I did try a pencil rubbing no joy however if it is irrelevant then it's all good because frame number is like new all characters very easy to read. Fossie if you could do a feature that would be great as information on web is not very idiot proof to say the least.

you will struggle to re stamp it, the suzuki engine number lettering font is specific to suzuki, commercially available stamps arent anything like the same. if the number is dificult to read id be suspicious. theyre well stamped and would have to have been substantially rubbed down to get to the stage where they are illegible. but, the engine number will begin with gs, all the 1000/1100 engines do.

It is a GS number , corrosion does deminish the number . However like I said when filling in the registration document ...V55/5 you can miss off the engine number. In reality the reg number is fixed to the frame , but you can fit another engine multiple times and Suzuki engine numbers and frame do not correspond anyway. When you see an advert for a Suzuki with matching numbers .......it is as they. Bollox!
