External cleaning of carbs, maybe painting

Post by Uncle Bob » Mon Mar 04, 2019 6:52 pm

Firstly, Fossie, click back now, this thread could contain graphic descriptions of cleaning processes and or imagery!

I am servicing a spare set of carbs I have and have stripped then down and am in the process of ultrasonically cleaning. They were SD carbs so painted black but as some paint had come off I'll strip them now as well. I had thought to leave bare but the external alloy once ultrasonically cleaned is a bit dull so how to clean the alloy surface. A previous set I had vapour blasted and they do look good but lots of people seem not to recommend doing this to carbs in case the media gets into the parts where you don't want it.

So is vapour blasting carbs a good or bad idea? If bad what other ways could you use? I have seen a vapour blasting company that uses soda which would be better than glass bead but they are in the US!

Other option is to paint again. I guess I am better getting that done in 2 pack and I guess it's fine with the carbs all together again as that looks to be the way it was done originally.

Just after ideas from others that have refurbished their carbs before.

I soda blasted the carbs on my T500 and they come up well. The added bonus of soda is the medium melts when you ultrasonic them. See below for before & after.
