Well I’ve finally got my arris in gear and stripped the top end of the motor and it looks to me like the previous owner was telling the truth and has fitted four new pistons & rings

there is no blow by marks front or back and the rings look as new. I haven’t measured the bores yet but they look good with no scoring and no wear ring at tdc. The camchain tensioner looks new as does the chain (well within limits)
So now it’s a matter of cleaning everything up and re-assembling and I should be good to go
One small thing troubling me is do I fit my shiny new Cruzin Image rings or leave the current ones in place?
