Speedo problems

Post by PaulD » Thu Apr 16, 2020 4:31 pm

Ever since I’ve had my Kat which is about 3yrs now? the fact that despite the PO putting a mph overlay on the clock it’s always read fast. I had totally forgotten a friend gave me one of those kph-mph converters everyone used on the grey imports years ago. I fitted it today so I’m just waiting for the lockdown to be lifted then I can see if it works. Fingers crossed.

You'll need to get rid of the overlay in that case.......

Well the overlay still reads wrong? I’ve followed a mate and while my speedo is reading 100mph he was doing 60mph so I’m hoping the converter will make it right. We shall see

Somewhere they are available, I have one somewhere , it came on a bike but I took it off because it is next to useless on a Katana as because the speedo starts at 5 o'clock position with the converter in place in real riding the needle only goes to 7 - 8 o'clock position so you always need to look down to register what it says if you get my drift.....
I'll see if I can remember where it is .....
Hang on... :? I'll wind me neck in :o you've got a mph overlay over Kms clocks , so the clocks are still Kms no matter what they say but , the face is mph ....so in theory the blue convertor will do as you wish....the only Katana which it will actually work correctly on ...

Jimmy 400 has 1 on his 400 which hasn't turned a wheel for a while , maybe he could lend you his .

I’ve got a black one (not blue or gold) which screws into the speedo, it does work as I used it originally, you can have it if you like Paul if yours isn’t working as I’ve got an electronic one now.
Cheers Mick, I’ll have that if your not going to use it 8-) 8-)

Paul,

My guess is that you have one of the US 80mph Speedo's fitted with a new UK mph face plate.

See this webpage and look at the speedo image down the page which is a 80mph speedo:
https://raresportbikesforsale.com/categ ... i/page/39/
60mph is at about 10 to 12

Now look at the 150 MPH speedo in the images on this page:
https://www.classicsuperbikes.co.uk/cat ... atana.html
100mph is at about 10 to 12 as well.

So this explains why when your mate is doing 60mph you are reading 100mph (the actual speedo you have, has the needle at 60mph on the 80mph clock, but your speedo face makes it look like 100mph because it is the wrong scale for the speedo internals)

One of the converters will not help you as the speedo you have is in MPH already (they convert kph to mph with gearing to get the right speed). You need to get of the 80mph replacement faces and fit that again, so that the scale suits the internals.

Does that make sense?

Yes that makes sense Rob, although the PO told me it was an Italian import and he had the clock unit “professionally” restored! The problem is if I get a US overlay I’m limited to 80mph, not that I ever exceed 70 your honour
