Katana 1000/1100 Speedometer Needles

Post by lesserscr » Mon Sep 21, 2020 8:22 pm

I'm looking for help / advice on the speedometer needles for the Katana 1000/1100. The needles on my bike have disintegrated beyond repair. I have followed Joey Huang's excellent guide on how to disassemble the speedometer and with a little coercion I have managed to lever off the central part of the needle. I had bought a set of Mitsubishi Shogun needles as a replacement as I had read that they were the same. Oh no they are not! The Mitsubishi ones sit on a pin the Katana ones sit on what looks like a gear, which I am guessing is quite unique? It seems that nobody stocks replacement needles, so my question is, is there a way forward? I would be grateful for any ideas. Thanks in advance. Simon

I believe you need to grind the boss of the spindle bit as it used to be one but age will have split it.

you need a box of cornflakes........
.

.
.
eat the contents then make a cover for your clock face from the box! cut a slot in it and slide the cardboard over the spindle so the face is covered and the brass ferrule is sticking through. then very very carefully using a dremmel with a disk cutting blade, cut the brass ferrule so that the steel spindle is left, theyre pressed together and you wont ever get it off any other way. cut vertically down the brass and keep going closer to the spindle till you see the steel uncovered from the brass. take your time, be uber careful, try not to break the spindle. you can stick the new needle on with an epoxy glue. youve monstered the hole in the middle there though. you can still get replica mph faces from ebay. alternatively, get some vinyl restorer, like back to black, the stuff they use for plastic bumpers on cars, and VERY VERY VERY carefully using a cotton bud, lightly apply the restorer to the face, if you rub too hard, you will lift the writing off, but with care you should get the dark blue colour back.
