gsx750 02 gsx1100efe/?

Post by BigLT » Wed Jan 05, 2011 10:44 pm

I have a resincorse Katana 750 with a siezed engine.

Due to the shape an cut outs of the fairing, I need to fit a similar aircooled engine.

The engine's on early gsx750 look the same externally. Am I right?

I would rather use a gsx1100 engine and they also look very simlar. Does anyone know if they are the same externally. Ie are engine covers etc likely to line up?

I've found donor bikes for both options above and want to get something sorted asap

Thanks

Liam

A couple of pics in case you don't know the fairing shape (yes I know its ugly, but its different and I like it, so its staying!)

You can use any of the old aircooled GSX engines, no matter if 7.5 or 11, even the older GS engines (750 or 1000) will fit, but these look a bit different around the cam caps. As been stated many times before - if you go for a 1100 ccm engine, you need to have different lower mounting brackets.

Thanks Pedda,

I now know what will fit into the frame and what is involved as knowledgeable people (you included!) have been a really great source of advice. What I am not sure of is the exact size of the engine and the position of the 'bits that stick out'.
The 750 in mine seems enormous, so I can quite believe that it is the same block as an 1100.

I dont think anyone will give you a definate Yes on this..............but they wont be a million miles away though.

The blocks arnt the same as the750 engine's lower engine mount is in a different position to the 1100/1000 motors. And the 750 motor has shell crank bearings as opposed to roller bearings in the 1100/1000 motors.
Im sure there would be a bit of slight adjustment of the resincourse fairing panels when fitted.

As they say........There's 2 chances!

They either line up...or they dont ! and you have to do some minor mods to the fairing panels.

Now stop talking about it and get it built! ;)

Good luck

Bobster

Ah, now I got you right, BigLT...

Yes, the ignition- and generator covers of 7.5 and 11 engines will live in the very same excesses of the fairing. The later EF or ES engines have different size casings but also at the same position.

no need to bother with the lower eng.mounts unless you are going for serious horsepower-we have run many 1000/1100/1230/1260 ET/EFE motors in 750 chassis with no adverse effects.
brace your frame while its in bits easy job.
the following covers interchange between the 750 and 1100 ET [1074/5cc]
rocker box/cam cover-2 different types tho'-later has more bolts
clutch cover
sprocket cover
the alternator cover looks the same but is not-it has an oilway on the bigger engines, which is not there on the smaller engines as they are shell bearings for the 750 and mighty roller bearings for the 1100,s-

all this is from ma heed, but bit rusty as been building british bikes for a while and just riding my sooz,s

I am always amazed by the knowledge you guys have - thanks for sharing it. I know a lot of questions...

(ps - looked at the 750 bike that I was going to use as a donor today, but it was no good: hole in the crankcase I could put my finger through!)

you really need an 1100 motor :D .the aftermarket for these engines is second to none,i include the current crop of water filled super whizzers,as the specs seem to change weekly on these tiny, little, glittery missiles.
be good to know which way you go,personally i would rather fit a gsxr 750 even though it,s oil cooled it,s a way better mill than the gsx750-also cheap and not that hard to find.

Right, before Bobster tells me off again, I am getting on with it now. Front and rear end ready to go in, tank is leaking irrepairably IMHO, so another one on the way etc etc I'll sort some pics out for the project page, but I only get about an hour a week at the moment, so progress is very slow.

Still hesitating over engines though ... Last engine question (honest) befoe I part with my cash:

The watercooled GSXRs are much cheaper than the oil-cooled ones, and as I will be using the fairing the looks don't make much difference. Do the GSXR conversion engine mounting plates that are online work for the water-cooled as well as the oil cooled? I've never owned a watercooled GSXR so don't know how different the blocks are.

Thanks

Liam
