another gsx1000sz rebuild

Post by chrismarbella » Sun Jun 08, 2014 3:25 pm

hi all
I got this oct 2012 from a nigel mellor in kent.i bought it unseen which was a gamble but wanted a project bike.
when it arrived it was in a worse state than I hoped, nigel had tried to get it running but failed so it will be interesting to see what state the engine is in.
to begin with its a case of stripping it down to see whats needed.

taking the seat off revealed a missing air filter and a lot of finely chewed bubble wrap, something was nesting in there at some time.

the needles are on the clocks which seams to be an issue with a lot of them.

Hi Chris, nice little project are you restoring it to original condition :?: , needles go brittle over time as my last set of clocks needles were intact, but 20 miles down road and both broke off , have you started doing jobs on it yet or not started ;) , yes most like pictures and a progress report ;)

Hi
I am going back to original to get it past the mot here,a 4 into 1 will then go on and who knows what else.(always wanted a mr turbo kit, never seen one in 25 years here in spain)
I found doing the commando seeing other peoples photos of work in progress helped massively.
this afternoon got the bodywork off and cleaned it to take to my local car body repair shop who said they can mend the faring and spray it all mind they have not seen the bits yet.

The X in frame number dosen't relate to year.
It is there to show 4 valves per cyl where as a GS had 2 .
The fact is you have an 1000 sz which would be 81. the snow flake wheels and footpegs show that.
The 83 had 3 spoke wheels and footpegs with a rubber pad.

it isn't unusual to find bike reg'd after the model date, dealer bought in bulk to get discounts then sold as and when.
The katana wasa slow seller at the beginning but late 82 to 83 people warmed to them.
13L is all you need to know.

Wow!.........number 34!

As for the fairing, is it fibre glass or plastic? it should be fibre glass because the earlier ones had them til they realised the fairing cracks around the indi mounts as people bump into them, or when they fall off the centre stand when parked on grass! ;-)

Don't ask!
