If not , he can do it next time he rebuilds it... Now come to think of it some Guzzis were lemons anyway.

Well another day in the shed.

Re-assembled the carbs with new jets, filters, float valves, seals and gaskets.

Replaced the plastic housing with brass items from my spares, New seal and O rings

Next up will be to fit them to the rails, re-assemble the choke linkage, do a static balance on the throttle valves and a leak check of the seals. That will have to wait ‘til next week as I’m waiting for threadlock (and some other bits)

Float heights set as well

The medium strength threadlock arrived so it was back to the shed to finish off.

First reassemble the carbs together onto the rails and fit the new screws to keep the four together. Quick check round all the float bowl screws. Then with the auxiliary fuel tank hooked up do a leak check on all the new O rings and seals.
All good.
Reassemble the start/choke actuators and check that none are slightly lifted when they are supposed to be closed.
Then when it is all good refit the new screws for the rails with threadlock.

Next was a static balance of the throttle valves using a 2mm drill. Close but it will need to be done dynamically when the engine is running.

All done ready to go back to Fred61.....

Might even try a persuade him to post up some of the progress he has made with the RED Pop Up AKA Fester

Not Show Pony standard, but will do the important bit which is getting another Kat back on the road. Hopefully running sweet....

Hi Bob.

Fairly straight forward to get all the butterflies to open up at the same time, but not as good as a set of gauges on a running engine.

I use the plain end of a 2mm drill and using the idle rate adjuster, set the butterfly on carb #3 to just grip the drill shank. Then set the butterfly for #2, #1 and #4 (in that order) to the same grip on the drill shank using the screw adjusters.

If you have 4 drills the same size then you can pretty much do them all at once. But with one drill and a bit of a deft touch (being a “Tiffy” by trade helps) it can be done.

Certainly not scientific, but close enough to get you going.

Well Fred61 has managed to get “RED Fester” the Pop Up MoT’d!

But he has a few problems with it that need assistance.

The PDF units on the front forks has developed a leak!

So we are after a pair of the units to get the bike back on the road again without leaving a trail of oil.

Either buy or borrow until we get the originals refurbed.


The other issue is that the cylinder head around inlet manifold #1 is completely FUBAR!

He has a temporary fix on it at moment, but it’ll need a proper job in the not too distant future
