Fork’n’Carbs

Post by Kryten » Mon Mar 02, 2020 2:31 pm

I have now a set of front forks and a set of carbs from Fred61’s RED Pop Up.

As he likes to scatter his photos and bits of info all over the place I thought I’d post up info on work that I am doing for him!

Although to be fair some of it involves mostly bubble wrap and sticky tape :D :D :D

One pair of forks. Scruffy as..

Lowers a bit rough, and some bling showing through the “Carplan Rattle Can Black”

Fork seal being ejected from housing by aluminium corrosion below. Standard pitting of the chrome stantions

Spoke to A M Philpots this morning and have arranged for them to collect the forks and do their thing to them.

Turn around expected to be 45 weeks..So that’s the bubble wrap and sticky tape bit done.

.....er sorry that’s 4 to 5 weeks. Smile and Wave, Boys! :D :D :D

Now that leaves the next task which contrary to rumours did not take me 12 weeks to do last time! :o  :D :D

One set of BS32SS carbs....

Not going to go in the washing machine, but the small Ultra-Sonic bath.

I have a full set of gaskets seals and O rings from NRP Carbs. And Fred has supplied me with a set of jets needle spacers drills and a wood screw that are guaranteed* to work on a GSX750 with an Harris 4-1
5642F12D-7C01-4340-BC6B-2CA324775D7D.jpeg
So that is my task.

Now nothing is simple. I have Bob the Builder and his men doing some work on the house at the moment; Ciara/Dennis/Jorge has left a (big) chunk of tree resting on the roof of my Kat cave and next week is pre-booked for family stuff! Oh I have a GSX10X engine on my workbench 8-)

But I will commence the strip-clean-rebuild after.

Oh and Fred has mentioned that some of the fittings of the carbs would look a lot better if they were re-plated.

Workspace is a little cramped but should be enough.
Hope I don’t need the press or the bush saw

A short time later...

All in bits only one screw holding a rail to a carb refused to surrender.

Carbs 3+4 were not to bad, but 1+2 were quite contaminated inside.

Balancing them would have been fun as the spring/pin on the throttle linkage for all carbs were seized!

Then it was into the Gunk tub to have a pre-wash.

Took a fair bit of cleaning to get them to a decent state for the Ultrasonic. Years of oil mist and road dirt built up. Looked like they were badly painted black :!:

1+2 sharing the tub!

Float bowl gaskets binned. Most of the jets are unidentifiable as the brass seems to have etched or corroded, but we have replacements.
Did try to re-use the float valve filters (which looked like new oddly enough) but the plastic edging just broke up as I removed them. Ordered some new from Robinsons as they are on discounted offer at moment :)

So it’s into the ultrasonic bath now for the carbs

This bit is like the pipeline vacuum drying I was occasionally involved with back in the dim and distant past.

Carb #1 in the ultrasonic cleaner. Using warm water and a drop of washing up liquid
IMG_20200424_162742907.jpg
As I can only set the timer for a maximum of 480 seconds I do need to be about most of the time.

My ultrasonic cleaner has a capacity of 2.5 litres so wont fully immerse a BS32SS
So if you are wondering what size to get I would think 5 litres capacity would be better

A busy afternoon yesterday saw carbs 1+2+3 all cleaned. Plus all the metal work around the “choke” etc.

Rod that connects the starter fuel/air circuits was a particular issue as it had some serious caked on cack. Also #2 carb had a lot of varnish around the butterfly. Think it had flooded when stored/laid up/abandoned and the fuel eventually evaporated away. That took some time

Will try the Jiff Lemon trip on #4 carb this afternoon and report back :D
