I wonder if the production accountants' cost-cutting was kicking in hard in the 1990's? I know Suzuki have always had a keen eye for cost reduction.

Anyway, they've lasted until now, so far exceeded the design life of all components.

Right, I have changed the coils and checked all wiring connections. I can't find anything obviously loose. Still no spark. Does anyone know how to test the CDI?

UB has sent me some tech info and some diagnostic tests to try. I will let you know how I get on.

send your cdi to someopne with a 400. if it works then your wiring is knackered. if it doesnt the cdi is knackered. better to send the cdi to someone with a known good 400 opposed to someone sending you their good cdi as if your wiring caused the problem, you could feck their cdi too :) - then therell more more upset folk ;)

Yes, good plan. I have a Suzuki qualified mechanic friend coming this week, just to check I haven't done anything stupid (highly likely). I'll see what he says and go from there.

Yes, thank you Rob for your kind offer of testing my CDI. I will be sending it to you if my mechanic doesn't find some other problem!

New igniter unit arrived today. Much quicker than expected (ordered July 11th from China. You do get email tracking updates every few days). I disconnected the battery, connected the igniter, then reconnected the battery. I don't know if you have to do that, but I didn't want near on £100 going up in smoke. With fear and trepidation I had one plug against the cylinder head, turned the key and gingerly thumbed the starter button. SPARK! Woohoo!

I put the tank back on and had the usual fight with the fuel and vacuum hoses. It's the clips that cause me the most aggro. A few cranks later and she's purring like a good 'un. And the fuel's been in the carbs for months.

Going to put the bodywork back on now and take her out for a run tomorrow.

I won't be setting fire to it just yet. Hopefully it's going to be good and I can come to EK10.
