Those clearances are for the air cooled 80's in line 4 ...you need the clearances for a '92-4 GSXR 400 w/c ooled or impulse ....

Thanks Fossie, that's brilliant. Would have been nice and quiet (for a while) on the other clearances!

If anyone has any 400 parts, please let me know. I am stocking up for the big restoration (sorry Fossie).

GGGRRRR... this bitch is driving me mad. After it running fine yesterday after a plug clean, today it wouldn't start.Yesterday, the plugs got a bit wet, so today (ambient temp about 17C) I decide not to use the choke (starter circuit). Engine spins over, but nothing happening. I use the choke, nothing. Plugs wet again. Choke off, throttle wide open, churn it over to try and clear it all out, then try again, nothing. last try, I give it some choke and it finally starts. Then runs perfectly. Quick 9 mile run to the post office, it starts again when I come out and runs perfectly home. It can't be fuel as I stored it over winter with ethanol-free fuel.

Anyone else with a 400 have a starting ritual that I could try to copy?

It's faster to break than to repair.

Damn thing not playing again today. Might explain the popularity of a motor swap.

Oooh, you are just getting JohnR started!
On the 250 carbs I did the end of last year the primer circuit runs through the float "frame" (and same on 400) and on all 4 they were very blocked so no fuel able to get to the primer circuit. It actually starts, so sucks in, from the float frame if you trace the orifice back. I got the missus finest needle and with Brake cleaner manged to unblock all of them. If trouble starting I would start there. Maybe take one off end carb while on bike so you can check, if blocked then do the rest, if clear maybe it isn't that. From your description is does sound like cold starting to that priming circuit.

I must get the 400 Services manual made as a PDF. For now here is the page with the valve clearances.

Thanks UB. I am going to try that, as every little helps. It actually has no sparks now, so some wire must of broken after the last ride, coincidentally after I stopped the engine and pushed it into the garage. It worked fine up until that point!

Thanks for the service page.
