starting refurb

Post by Hully » Sun Aug 28, 2022 6:21 pm

Hi all, I have been waiting till i got rid of my nephews bike out of my garage as he was on holiday and the estate he lives is the roughest in Hull......... so that is rough !!!!!!
I'm going to dismantle the calipers and start on refurbing the brakes. Is there any brake pads what are useless and best avoided? and can you still get loy blocks for cleaning alloy or whats the best alternative??? they seam to hve dissappeared of the face of the earth.

Will get some pics as it takes transformation.

Thanx.

Brake pads for Gs range you can pick up for not that much , you should be able to source EBC , or SBS old stock ....you're not in the HH sintered or Kevlar GP domain here ....just commoner garden Touring compound will surface.
As for alloy cleaning the callipers , paint strippers are no where near as good as you'll remember because of various legisations ..but a couple of coats and wire wool will but adequate then a decent alloy primer ... Ford cardinal red . off the shelf paint.

Cheers Fossie. Deffo will get some of that paint. The loy blocks where for the engine casings. But will be giving the calipers the ince over. Rear is black and fronts are red !!!!!
I’m thinking, keep original but nice and clean and get it on the road for now. But at a later date, maybe a few upgrades of some description.

Wire wool and Autosol (other brands are available.....) will work wonders on bare alloy normally

I've got regular EBC on Smallkat and the intitial bite is poor. I'm going to try Goldfren GP5 pads next. I can get them relatively cheaply and the compound is like EBC HH.
