I'm trying to set up a wireless router but I'm struggling to understand some of it.

So I'm gonna bug you lot for answers, (if that's ok)?

OK 1st question, it's asking what type of connection I have
PPPoE, PPPoA, Static, DHCP, Bridge, CLIP

How would I find this out?

Most use PPPoA according to google Jez.

What router you got ?

Have you not used the wireless network wizard in windows ?

I got a D Link DSL-G604T router & I've got it connected to internet but I can't make head nor tail of setting up security.
I bought this about 9 years ago & couldn't suss it out then...makes even less sense now

OK when I try to set up a password (I think) it asks for "Enter 10, 26, 58 hexadecimal digits for 64, 128, or 256 bit Encryption Keys respectively. e.g., AAAAAAAAAA for a key length of 64 bits." WTF does that mean what are 10 hexadecimal digits????

WTF??? Every wireless network I know uses simple passwords like family, royal blue etc etc. I've just googled hexadecimal digits & now I'm more confused then ever....now you really DO need to know rocket science!!!

maybe dont use WEP. Use WPA instead - which i think gives you a "normal" password.

Hexadecimal counts in base 16 as opposed to base 10

Hence 1 - 10 then a - f (a = 11 etc)

Similar to the way binary use 1 and 0 only

if it's 9 years old then it not gonna be nearly as easy to setup as the ones you'd buy nowadays.... todays really are plug n play... older ones you need to setup quite a bit..... if you want to easily setup a wifi network.... then enfore MAC filtering. That way you just stick your PC's MAC address (the number that is specific to the wifi adaptor in any device) into an exception list on the router and then anything NOT in the list will not be able to connect. simple. if your confused, this is the easiest way to secure it.

I'm even more confused now Steve, think my best bet is to ditch the D Link & buy something newer...the only Mac filtering I know is me refusing to go in McDonalds
