Going for a ride

Post by Cold Snail » Tue Jul 03, 2012 7:44 pm

I've just bought another bike and even got a whole week off next week and have decided to go for a ride.

Here's a rough idea of what I have in mind (the map may be back to front).

Map link.

If all goes to plan (got to sort an oil and coolant leak, get a battery and wire in a 12v socket for chargers), I should be able to set off Saturday morning (possibly Friday afternoon?) and have until the following Saturday to make it back (the Sunday will be spent with my ar$e in a cold bath more than likely :D)

I will be mostly slumming it in the tent, but anyone knows of any good campsites en-route with washing facilites (or even B&B's), please let me know.

So far...

Yesterday, bought bike for £650 off ebay.
Today, insured and MOT'ed (spotted leaking rocker cover gasket and coolant pipe).
Rest of week, fix leaks, replace battery, wire in 12v socket, get topbox fitted, road tax and tools, tubes and tent together.

The plan...

Saturday, Tunbridge Wells to somewhere in Scotland going up the M6 side.
Sunday, Aim for half way up the west coast.
Monday, tacky photo op in John O' Groats.
Tuesday, Edinburgh (ish).
Wednesday, Home.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday - well it's bound to go wrong somewhere, so these days will be backup.

Should be a bit of fun, might even get the bike up to 18,000 miles by the end of it.

Right, the bike's taxed, tested and has been taken for a 10 mile blat.
I've fitted a humongous top box to it, so it has the vague front end at cruising speeds.

I understand there is a bit of weather up north at the moment, so the plan as it stands is to check the weather warnings in the morning and if I do set off, the route will be changed for the more main roads.
It's a bit tricky to gauge as I will be on my Todd, but if I don't do it this week, I doubt I would be able to for quite a few years.
