Polished covers - Bare Metal or Lacquer?

Post by Uncle Bob » Wed Apr 18, 2018 4:41 pm

This is Alexandre's fault, because at EK7 he pointed out the silver painted engine cases on the 400 not being original!

So I have been thinking about getting them blasted ever since and finally took some of them to a local vapour blaster to get them blasted and polished. I can then also add the round Suzuki badges that sit each side, which I purchased some time ago in anticipation.

What I wanted to know is am I better leaving them bare metal and having to polish every now and then or should I get them lacquered - I'm not sure what people do.

Lacquer them with a good petrol/ oil resistant lacquer . You may well think hey I'll just keep on top the cleaning /polishing. Life's just toooo short .

Where as I on the other hand just love polishing and cleaning my bikes. I think it’s very therapeutic sitting down on a cushion and rubbing small circles on shiny alloy. Then again I’m well known for being weird  I’ve found a better alternative to the usual Solvol, it’s called Mothers alloy & mag polish. It’s not as abrasive as Solvol and the finish is just awesome.

I go for the "regularly used" look. Pretty sure there's still some Bordeaux hanging on. :-o

Shame on you sir  I’m now firmly in the “sunny days only” camp. I’ve done the riding in all weathers, icicles hanging off the end of my nose, carrier bags on my feet and scarf wrapped around my face (I couldn’t afford a full face for a loooong time) my bike is now a toy I like to polish (a lot) tinker with (quite a lot) and ride when I feel like it and the weather is nice. Yes I know I’m a wimp and should be horse whipped

Perhaps I'll lacquer one side and leave the other side to polish :-)
