Wiring help

Post by Berti44 » Sun May 15, 2022 1:18 pm

At the back of the headlight there is a black and white wire. This actually comes from inside the loom. But I can’t find another wire like this to connect it to.
There’s a green and white wire cut and tapped up, no clue as to why. What does this connect to?
Finally a simple one for those who know. The negative earth strap goes where on the frame? Any help much appreciated. Trying hard to get it done for Ripon.

Black and white is Earth on an 80's GS / GSX
Green with white tracer is side stand switch ( warning light only fitted to some markets)..which is why it has a red cover on the bullet .
So b/ w I suspect side light along with a brown wire , if not it is the other wire to side stand switch.

Large "earth"strap goes to the long bolt on top of the engine case to the battery
However that particular lead it isn't an earth strap it a starter lead from starter motor to Starter solonoid .

Doing my head in had to look now 🙈
The side stand switch, I think goes to two wires coming out of the main harness by the black box/igniter black/white tracer and green/white tracer.
I’m guessing the switch still functions but without a warning light.
The stator at the moment has live lead going to top of starter relay and the black lead from the starter motor to the second stud below.
Looking at the diagram with a battery negative lead - displays it going to the crankcase as ground.

Found this in the manual so that’s one problem sorted.

There is no side stand switch fitted to your bike . The warning light for it on yours is the 50 mph ( 80 kph) bottom left on the dashboard.
Look by the side stand there is 2 little screw holes ...the switch fits between them ..only some models got it. The JDM didn't.

People make the mistake that that thick lead is an earth because it's black , but it carries the live feed from starter to solonoid and is thick to carry voltage.

Cheers fossie, I’m about as bright as my lights with electrics, dim, but I’m learning.
Ive fitted a side stand switch - and connected two wires as per the photo to the G/W and B/W. See the original connector photo. From your comments I guess this was just left in fresh air.
Looking at the manual positive lead goes to starter relay and thick black wire from starter motor to the other stud. Do I understand you right that the thick black wire off the negative battery lead also goes to starter? So two thick black leads on bottom stud together.
I think the photos might have caused confusion. The photo of the thick black wire is off the battery not the starter motor.

I wouldn't have fitted a side stand switch myself until you've run the bike ....because the area on the dashboard with Japanese writing is the 50 mph warning light OR the side stand light....so if is in use there won't be a light to light! See the pop up write up and there is a picture of the 2 types.

Thick black wires .....one from the bolt on the case to negative on battery ....the other from bolt on case of starter motor to starter solonoid ..this is actually live ...the stater motor is bolted to the engine and this is the earth side ...pressing the starter sends live through the thick wire ( live) to activate the windings. ;)

Big thanks for your help I’ve got lights and turn over now time to fit new plugs and coils. Hopefully I’ll have a nice bright spark.

I’ll check out the write up of the two types 👍
