Battery preferences

I’ve had a bit of a brainstorm (very painful ) I really like the idea of the low maintenance Motobatt but having no power in the garage rules out the use of an optimate. So what do you think of one of these solar chargers? I could screw it in to the garage roof and have the battery on charge when I’m not using the bike would it be powerful enough to keep it topped up or will it fry the battery if I left it connected for weeks at a time? Your thought please.

I am not surprised. Recent new regulations mean that you need to have a chemical licence to buy sulphuric acid. So you are allegedly only able to buy batteries that are wet from a registered supplier with acid filled already.

AGM batteries can be supplied via a courier or post, but wet batteries are not allowed as far as I know.

That seems like a good idea Paul! I'm not sure I would go with the one you linked to as none of the images shows lead acid battery charging, just the title says that, but it is cheap enough to try I guess if you want to. I wasn't sure if the panel needs to kick out more than 12V. I did see this article as well that was an interesting read:

I'd probably buy the Optimate fused cable for the battery and change the ends on the panel leads so that you can plug in easily. You can then use Optimate connector for other things - I made a microUSB charger cable that I used on the 400 to keep the mobile charged when going to Denmark this year (using phone as SatNav in top of tank bag that I just plugged in and out as required.

That’s brilliant Bob just what I was looking for. I just showed the link I posted to give people an idea of what I was thinking about. I’m thinking I’ll go down the Motobatt route now I know my solar panel idea is feasible
