Re: front wheel spindle
so couldnt i just use a couple of spacers(washers) either side of the bearing to make up the 2mm gap ?

Re: front wheel spindle
I dont think you wouldnt be able to fit one on the inside of the bearing because it would probably slip to one side inside the wheel and obstruct the pathway for the wheel spindle............I think you will need to get a specially made inner wheel spacer that is 2mm longer than the standard one.
Remember that the inner spacer spins with both wheel bearings when the wheel spindle is tightened.

Re: front wheel spindle
But Bobster, if the inner spacer was longer the bearings wouldnt sit flush against the wheel or does that not matter ?
Thanks for your help.

Re: front wheel spindle
std width for the bearings is 12mm you said? if you get replacement bearings that are 10 or 11mm wide then the inner spacer needs to be longer to make up the difference.... else the wheel/spindle whatever thingy won't tighten properly

Cheers for the reply Steve........
But (bear with me)........the bearings sit against a recess on both sides ...right? so if the spacer inside was longer than that would push the bearings away from the recess ?
or.....do they not sit against the recess in the first place ?
I would have thought a spacer on the outside of the bearing would work.
Might just give in and junk the bastard things.

Re: front wheel spindle
Looks like youve already made you mind up what you are going to do.............but I have told you what you need to do!
If you try to fit washers on the outside of the wheel bearings they will drop down when you try to fit the wheel spacers and spindle. Basically if both of the wheel bearings are 2mm thinner than standard you'll need to get a inner spacer 4mm longer than the standard on ( 2 x bearings = 2x2mm =4mm) and then get some big washers/spacer 2mm thick both sides, that sit behind the bearing before you install the bearings................

no it doesnt. when you tighten the wheel spindle, it pulls the inner race of the bearing tight against the centre spacer and the outer spacers at each end and if it has one, the speedo drive unit, and the fork legs and none of these rotate. all are held tight by the spindle and its nut, and the wheel rotates round on the ball races in the bearings.

Re: front wheel spindle
Pete what peeps is trying to say is, that although the bearing sits on the recess when you tighten the spindle bolt, you will be applying pressure in the middle of the bearing And if the spacer isn't long enough or missing then the bearings will crush at the centre while the outer edge is tight. Upshot goosed bearings at best or bearing ready to collapse at any moment when you least want the too.
