Big Kat Tyre Choice

Post by Richiemouse » Tue Oct 11, 2011 2:06 pm

I can't remember fitting much other than Metzellers and Avons to my Kat in the 80's & 90's but I don't know diddly about modern options in Kat sizes. I need a set for my 1000 and was thinking of Pirelli Sport Demons (fitted these to my standard EFE and really happy with them) or BT45's as they seem a popular choice. Any comments from anyone who's used either of these or any other recommendations? I'm happy to sacrfice longevity over grip.

Due to a very limited selection of tyres available, most of us use BT45s.....and we dont appear have many problems with them either Richie.

hope this helps

BT45's are good tyres, also Avon road rider's are a very good choice (and often cheaper).

You can still use Metzelers. They updated the performance even of the Lasertec type, which still look like the old classic you will still know from back in the day.

As Pedda said lasertec same as old me33- me99 you had but different compound.
BT 45 is where I would go , Conti Go are also good but not as long lived as the conti's they replaced. :?
Avon Road rider which will always get mentioned because they are quite good and cheap . IN THE DRY , don't try to ride in any spirited way if someone sneezes in the same county as you, that'll be enough moisture to upset them.
I've got them on my work bikes due to cost , but cornering in the wet requires the bike upright rider lean pose.
But the tyres are the same pattern front and back just reversed for front back rotation, so water dispelling limitations are ot be expected. Also quite intersting in heavy rain on industrial park. NEVER jackknifed a bike before.!! :o :P

Thanks for the input, looks like BT45's are probably the way to go then.

Pedda, I was never really very happy with the Metzellers of old, not particularly grippy. I remember a RWYB at Santa Pod many moons ago with my VBS engined 1100. I was just sliding all over the place off the line until I finally got some heat it the rear tyre and it hooked up unexpectedly. One second I was staring down the track the next I was looking at the gantry over the track behind the lights with the bike totally stood up on the back wheel. Still don't know how the front came down pointing in the right direction.
