car problem
Watcha, anyone help ? My kids grandad has one of those old Toyota Townace MPV things. He has a problem starting it. Had loads of problems with it intermitantly(spelling) not starting.
He has a good new battery on it. The car does not turn over, just a click from the solonoid. The lights are not dimming on trying to start so am i right in assuming that the starter solonoid is poobar and not engaging properly ?
He had some dodgy bloke stick a new starter on it but i reckon he stiched him up. Charged him way too much money.
Any ideas ?
Pete

Re: car problem
if you can connect battery direct to starter (i know some of the access is a bit tight on those) and it strats its the solenoid
however if the guy "fixing it" was dodgy there is no guarentee the stater he fitted was 100%

Re: car problem
as with anything electrical, 'check your earths' you need to know where your click came from. is it a pre enged starter motor? does it have the solenoid built into it? trace the red lead from the battery to the starter motor, ell s wha you find.

Re: car problem
Cheers boys. He has got the bloke who fitted the new starter to come back and have a look tomoz. He has already paid way to much for a new starter to be fitted, and even paid him £50 to come out after that coz it wasnt working still !!! if he pays him money tomoz i will be sooo pissed off. The stupid car isnt worth spending money on. The cam belt went this year and he spent £1500 on that alone. The car aint worth that !!! The guy charged him £300 for a new starter !!!!!!! will see what happens. I reckon the solonoid is playing up.
Was going to run a wire from the battery straight to the starter, but he wouldnt let me coz the bloke is coming back tomoz.

Re: car problem
It's the starter motor , there are 2 sets of bushes in there and people try to get away with doing just one ,which will work for a while.
That said after taking the starter off the lead to it is a must for checking.

Cheers Fossie, not sure what the guy did to be honest. Would have expected a new starter for what he charged the first time (£300+). see what happens today.

Re: car problem
Well the guy got the car running. He tried a wire from the battery direct to the starter and it worked fine. Had a look and said that there was a poor connection going to the starter and that it should be ok now.
Will wait and see.
