GSX400SSN piston and rings

Post by Alexandre » Fri Apr 26, 2013 12:59 pm

Hi all,

I've just had to open my 400's engine before trying to restart the bike, as while opening the engine sump for a good clean I found debris from the back chain tensioner which must have started desintegrating itself just before dismantling the bike 2 years ago !
No real damage inside so pretty lucky I am, but as the pistons/rings are at their tolerance limit I wanted to go for the +0.5 size. Turns out they are now unavailable in Japan, as are the +1 pistons.
AFAIK the piston/rings/rods are specific to the Kat400 so no cross-sharing with Bandit or Gixxer 400 :-(
So I have enquired for normal rings availability, which would at least make the engine tighter, but I'm wondering whether some of you have other ideas/experiences ?

Thanks in advance ;-)

Alexandre

It's the same engine as the '94 'Impulse' Alex.

Have you tried searching pistons for that?

Hi KatGeezer,
not really looked into that one, but search was based on OE Suzuki part numbers - AFAIK most common parts to the Kat and Impulse are the same reference (XXXXX-46DXX coding) ?
Does anyone have an Impulse parts list to check precisely ?
For comparison purpose, the Kat 400 parts lists states on figure 7 (crankshaft and pistons) :
10-1 PISTON 12111-46D00-0F0
10-2 PISTON (OVERSIZE 0.5) 12111-46D00-050
10-3 PISTON (OVERSIZE 1.0) 12111-46D00-100
11-1 PISTON RING SET 12140-46D10
11-2 PISTON RING SET (OVERSIZE 0.5) 12140-46D10-050
11-3 PISTON RING SET (OVERSIZE 1.0) 12140-46D10-100

Thanks for your help !

Fossie's right - too old stuff !
But thanks for looking ;)
Also just checked my docs, Bandit 400 has 56mm pistons while Katana 400 has 52mm.
Not sure the Kat cylinder could be oversized that much and what it would give on the road !
There are 442cc Piston/ring kits for Gixxers and Bandits and they are +3mm oversize !

Just what I thought/feared then !
Thanks fot looking.
;)

I've just had news from Japan, the standard rings are the only part still available.
Better than nothing, then, but won't be a long lasting repair alas !

BTW, do you think you could e-mail me a copy of the Impulse parts list if it isn't too huge a file ?
