Gs 650 g starting

Post by zorteus » Mon Feb 17, 2020 12:00 am

Hi guys
My katana decides not to start on button and not cranking over atall.. Get the click that's all. Done solenoid and same. Battery is good. So seems the negative connection on frame. There good etc
No noise from starter at all. Big wire to starter looks good.

Bike does run sweet, can start it by bump. So not engine or carb problem.

I don't think the starter the problem as never had any prior tell tell signs, I'm more inclined with earth or wiring fault.
Must be something common on these so hope someone can point me in the right direction with their experience of the gs650g and save time on my investigation 😁

This brings back memories as I had exactly the same experience . It turned out to be worn bushes in the starter motor. Can't complain, they had been in there for37 years. Good luck..../John.

I'm with John on this one , sounds like bushes , it th solonoid clicks , and it bump starts then the only thing left is starter motor.
An auto electrics fellow should be able to sort it quits cheaply ....they can here in Mancunia.
I would however just clean up the small black /white wire that goes from the bracket that hold the solonoid to the loom ...it is short and connects about the fusebox area .

put a spanner across the solenoid and see if it spins up. a clicking solenoid only means that its opening inside, it doesnt follow that its making electrical contact inside. get a multimeter and check you have 12v at the solenoid, then press and hold the button and make sure you have 12v at the other side of it. then finally cheeck that you have 12v at the starter and that the cables arent broken and are getting warm. if all that checks out and you have a good earth from the engine to the frame, then the starter is suspect.

I have had that a couple of times on my 650 Katana. Both times turned out to be the starter motor.
Unfortunately, Suzuki have positioned it so that you have to remove the carburettors to gain access which is a pain.
