Oh bugger

Post by Pop-Kat » Sun Nov 06, 2011 6:48 pm

Thought i'd take the std popup out for a little spin today, went to start it and it wouldn't. Not a problem i didn't expect it to as the chokes don't work right on the carbs. So as i've done before i bumped it, turned the fuel to prime for some fuel flow and lightly pushed some rag down the air filter inlet. 2 bumps and she started, took the rag out and kept it running on the throttle....

So far so good..

THEN about 30 seconds later a squeek and oil shot out of the front of the motor about 6ft  then dumped vitually a sump load on the road, i shut the bike off asap...

The oil was pissing/pouring from the oil filter cover, one of the nuts was hanging off and the rubber seal was hanging out the side, the nut was stripped of thread.

The oil filter cover had been blown off with oil pressure :o

I've no idea why this has happened, i've done approx 600 miles on the bike since august with no engine troubles, infact i was suprised as it used no oil and there's no smoking (it had sat unused for 10 years). Although it made a mess on the road i'm glad it happened there rather than whilst riding. the only thing i can think is that the oil pressure release valve was stuck ?, this lives in the sump..

All i can do is take the sump off and check it, replace all 3 studs on the oil filter cover and try again..

I've posted in the bar as i'm not looking for how to fix (although opinions are welcome)
No just having a rant  and looking for sympathy as i'm a bit pee'd off :(

be positive Mal,
you have not blown the motor or thrown it down the road and your mailing from A&E.
it might be the combination of cold thick oil and the valve sticking a bit, but we know you can fix it mate ;)

Mainly the 'b' team there though, Harry's earmarked the top 4 as the most important thing this season.

Anywho, that's a serious amount of pressure build up. Can a sticky valve on it's own do that??
