Gear Shifting Switch
I had a small oil leak from switch. Thought I would replace O ring. As I took switch off the lead broke from within the switch. Switch was working fine.....but looks like a sealed unit so cannot replace lead. Do I have to get a new one (£29
)..or is it repairable (
).

Re: Gear Shifting Switch
Hi Jerry
I assume it is the Nuetral Indicator switch you are talking about.
I have repaired one before but there was enough wire from the switch to do a soldered joint.
Not sure if you can open them up to get at the contacts without wrecking it. I'll have a look at Skruffy Kat and see what it isl like

Re: Gear Shifting Switch
Thanks Jim...be interesting to see want you find.
I have just about enough wire to solder onto but I had to dig it out of the body of the switch. As you know there is about an inch of wire layered into the outer facing of the switch and covered in a sort or 'hard silicon' (best way i can describe it!!). So majority of the layered wire is still in place.
Cheers
Jerry

Re: Gear Shifting Switch
Hi Jim
You gave me the confidence to just go for it........soldered up and covered in silicon. Fitted back and now all working. Hopefully will last for a bit
Cheers mate

Re: Gear Shifting Switch
Hi Jerry,
Glad you have had what will hopefuly be a solution.
Had a look at the bike and the various manuals and drawings I have, now some one may correct me, but this is how I think it works.
The contact pin located in the end of the selector drum completes a circuit down to earth. In neutral this pin is in line with a contact on the end of the wire that you have solder repaired. There are no moving parts in the switch body so if you needed and were able you could dig out pretty much all the potting compound (as it is called) this may give you even more wire to join to or even allow you to solder a new wire direct onto the contact.
There is the possibility of a substitute as Sparki has done from a later GSXR, but you could use the gear indicator switch from another model GSX and disregard the other 5 wires used for gear indication circuit, although you would have to remake the connection from a multi-pole to a single bullet type.
On the bikes with the Digital Gear Indicator as the selector drum rotates to a different angle, then a different contact is made to earth and the relavent lamp is illuminated on the indicator, I dont think the 550/650 are interchangable with the 750 or 1100 as they had 6 gears, unless some one has done it in the past.

Re: Gear Shifting Switch
Yep basically all the bodies are the same just more contacts for 550 650 GS and 550 750 1100 GSX . Any fit the only wire needed for neutral is the blue.
And so would be easy to fit gear indicator to any really.
