cam cover bolts 550

Post by callyboy » Wed Mar 14, 2012 12:51 pm

As per instructions from Johnr (get your bike out of the garage and ride it !) I was out today and noticed i have a very small leak from the chrome cam end cover.Does the bolt have a washer gasket on it, as thats the only place i can see oil coming out of ?

Thanks

Pete

I have looked on Alpha-sports..........and the answer is No!

Have you put some different /longer bolts/screws in place of the screws that hold the chrome cover/s on?...........and possibly punched a hole through to the inside of the cam cover casing, where the oil is....... and the oil is creeping down the thread ?

Or is the half moon seal between the cylinder head and cam cover leaking slightly?

or you hav'nt tightened the cam cover.............

Or you have the wrong length bolts on the cam cover................and they are thread bound and not pulling the cam cover down.............

knowing you Pete................probably all of the above..................

You could always wrap a tiny bit of PTFE tape round the thread if you have punched a hole through to where the oil is.................. ;)

Thanks Rob, its good to know i inspire so much confidence in you

Its not the half moon leaking. The bolts were the ones in it when i got it

I will try some tape round it and let you know if it works......O wise and knowledgeable one 8-) 8-) 8-)

If I were you, i'd be removing the affending screw and checking down the hole with a piece of wire or thin screwdriver to see if someones put the wrong screws in, and possibly punched a hole through the casing.................just because they were fitted before, doesnt mean they are the correct screws..............if you catch my drift! ;)

Oh you do brighten my mundane and boring life up m8!

I have just stripped my TS125erz down yesterday and today.................

lots of bodges found on the bike...............

Had to cut the swinging arm out with a grinder as the bolt was seized solid!

 Pete, have you ever owned a TS125erz?

Had a looky....Think Mr Smarty pants was right about the oil being drawn along the bolt thread   Took the cam cover cap off and had a blast round the block and had a look - no oil leak

Have put the cap back but only put one screw back on where i dont think its coming thru and see what that does.

Bolts look ok for length , so maybe longer ones have been put in in the past and gone thru the casing.

Thanks Rob ;) ;)
