weird noise in the top of the engine kat 400?

Post by superfly » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:14 pm

Hi lads,

I was having a look over on the bike tonight and she needs love.
I think I am going to have to fork money in it this year again (chain, shock absorber, carbs), but I might have to do something else.

I was listen to all of it running the bike as a noise coming from the top of the engine, a bit like a rattle sounds, between the chain and the exhaust I never notice it.

But now I do need to do something. I am think the only thing which could rattle will be the belt tensioner or the belt it self?

Any idea if I am heading in the right direction or not?

Does someone as an idea of the cost involve in parts and/or getting it done by a garage place?

I never done it, but I don't think it will be too hard. ;)

What do you reckon?

I'm not familiar with 400 cc engines. Do they have a belt? I thought of the cam chain tensioner in the first place, maybe you'd also check the valve clearances.

Might even be a stange noise coming from the exhaust gaskets leaking...

There is a chain as far as I know, I thought about the valves clearances too.

I don't think this kind of rattle come from the exhaust gasket leaking, as the noise seems to be really inside to me, however it is worth to have a look definitely.

It sound that next weekend, I have a big mecanic week. I have the cage to finish and the bike to change the carbs...

Really hard to say without hearing it Arnaud.

Camchain is the most likely but valves also worth checking. Fossie's done a million miles on his so might have a different insight.

As Katgeezer said my 400 has been round the clock and the camchain has never been a problem , but the bike was in regular use.
camchain tensioners do stick if not used too often, unfotunatley unlike the earlier kats there is no external wheel to jolt it.
I would howver check valve adjustment first , also carb balance , if you've not already done so.

Jimmy's 400 makes the sound you describe and I feel it is valves , the tolerance is very small and witha short stroke engine the tapping sounds like a rattle.
